Safe alternating guide for children
Yes, you can alternate them, but it's not usually necessary and increases the risk of dosing errors. Try one medication first.
If one medication isn't controlling the fever, you can alternate:
| Time | Medication |
|---|---|
| 8:00 AM | Tylenol (acetaminophen) |
| 12:00 PM (4 hrs later) | Motrin (ibuprofen) |
| 4:00 PM (4 hrs later) | Tylenol |
| 8:00 PM (4 hrs later) | Motrin |
Some doctors say it's safe, but there's no proven benefit over alternating. Stick to alternating if needed.
Either works. Motrin may last longer (6-8 hrs vs 4-6 hrs) and is better for pain/inflammation.
Wait 6 hours to be safe, then give either one. Keep a written log going forward.
